Satan's Penguins is a Swedish Avantgarde Black Metal band with clear influences from Doom Metal and Jazz. They were formed in Stockholm in 1998 and disbanded in 2014 due to the lack of audience interest. This is their first demo "Arctic Winter" from 1999 and is still one of the coolest demos I've ever heard. One would think that this is just a sort of parody, but they mix humor with darkness and make its ridiculous part to something more serious.

This isn't going to be a long review, because I just want to draw attention to their existence and that it actually is something to pay attention to. The band consists of musicians from Feral (Xul), Hydra, Assault and Soul Source and thoroughly they are some really talented musicians. In "Arctic Winter" they hasn't found a drummer yet, so they programming it with drum machines, which don't minds me at all. I like their free access to blend composition with Techno-beat that clearly toned up in the first song "Gargamels Revenge" - The whole intro of that song is dirty and offers clean and hefty black metal.

The second song "Penguin Of Destruction" is progressive in its own little way and as soon as the drums kicks off in connection with the distorted guitars, we soon enough know what is to come. The supercharged power will soon be making a sharp stop when the slow song "Satan's Penguins" creeps in and it takes a while before its coolest song "The Weak" kicks off. Then we get a taste of the "Army of Doom" which is really Jazzy and gives us a foretaste of what will later become Satan's Penguins debut-album "Birds of Darkness" from 2001. The last song on the demo is "The Return of the Arctic Chillness" and is a quiet and melodic loop with clean and clear guitar effects.

To compile the demo, this is a hysterically good start for Satan's Penguins. It does not sound like any other black metal bands and run a very own style which clearly shows in their recent full-length album. I recommend this to anyone who appreciates Black Metal in general, this is really something extraordinary.
